VEHICLE DIAGNOSTICS · DALRY, AYRSHIRE
Vehicle Diagnostics in Ayrshire
If a warning light, unusual behaviour or another symptom has appeared, West Coast Performance in Dalry can investigate it. We look at the vehicle, the reported symptom and relevant history before drawing any conclusions, rather than replacing parts based on a code alone, for drivers across Ayrshire.
Some Warnings Need Prompt Action
Most warning lights and symptoms can reasonably wait for a booked assessment, but some should not be ignored. A red warning light, overheating, a loss of braking, heavy smoke or a severe loss of power mean you should stop somewhere safe and seek professional or recovery advice rather than continue driving.
- A red warning light: seek prompt advice rather than continuing your journey
- Overheating or a loss of braking: stop safely as soon as it is safe to do so
- Heavy smoke or a severe loss of power: seek professional or recovery advice
- Any doubt about whether the vehicle is safe to drive: seek advice before continuing
Reasons to Request Diagnostics
These are common reasons drivers in Ayrshire contact us about a vehicle diagnostic assessment. Each one needs its own investigation rather than a general assumption.
Dashboard Warning Light
A warning light needs to be interpreted in the context of your specific vehicle, not read in isolation.
Intermittent or Changed Behaviour
A change that comes and goes, or behaviour that feels different to normal, is worth noting and discussing with us.
Unusual Running or Performance Concern
An unusual sound, feel or performance change is worth investigating before assuming a cause.
Noticing one of these does not tell us what is causing it. That is exactly what a diagnostic assessment at our Dalry workshop is for, and getting in touch sooner rather than later generally gives us more to work with.
UNDERSTANDING FAULT CODES
A Fault Code Is a Clue, Not the Complete Answer
A stored fault code points towards an area or system that may be involved, but it does not automatically prove which specific part has failed. Codes are a starting point for investigation, not a finished diagnosis on their own.
Context matters just as much as the code itself. Your reported symptoms, when they occur, the vehicle’s history and suitable follow-up checks all help build an accurate picture, which is why we look at the vehicle as a whole rather than acting on a code in isolation.
This is also why we do not offer to simply clear a warning light without investigating what triggered it. Clearing a code on its own does not address the underlying cause, and the light is likely to reappear once the vehicle detects the same condition again.
Diagnostics, Servicing or Repair?
These three can relate to each other, but they are not interchangeable. A diagnostic assessment does not automatically include servicing or repair work, and nothing beyond an agreed investigation is assumed.
Diagnostics
Investigating a reported symptom or warning to understand what may be involved.
Servicing
Planned routine maintenance carried out at a point that suits your vehicle.
Repair
Approved corrective work, carried out only after a need has been identified and agreed.
If our investigation points towards a maintenance item or a repair, we explain what we have found and agree the next step with you separately, rather than assuming you want that work carried out at the same visit.
BEFORE WE START
What Helps a Fault Investigation
Useful information can guide our investigation, though it does not replace inspection and testing. The more accurately you can describe what you have noticed, the more efficiently we can begin looking into it.
None of this is required before you contact us, and we are happy to talk it through with you if you are not sure what is relevant.
- An accurate description of the symptom
- When it occurs, such as on start-up, at speed or when braking
- Any dashboard messages or warning lights shown
- Recent servicing or repair work already carried out
- Previous repairs related to the same area, if any
- Any modifications already fitted to the vehicle
- Whether the issue is constant or intermittent
OUR PROCESS
From Initial Report to Clear Next Steps
Every diagnostic enquiry follows the same sequence, from your first description of the symptom through to a clear explanation of what we found.
01
Share Vehicle Details and Symptoms
You tell us about your vehicle and what you have noticed.
02
Record When and How It Appears
We note when the issue occurs and any patterns you have observed.
03
Inspect and Review Relevant Information
We examine the vehicle and consider any history or information available.
04
Carry Out Appropriate Investigation
We carry out diagnostic investigation appropriate to the reported symptom.
05
Explain Findings and Limitations
We explain what we have found, and any limitations, in plain terms.
06
Discuss Any Separate Repair Work
If repair work is needed, we quote and discuss it separately before it is agreed.
Diagnostics for Different Vehicles
Technology, age, condition, existing modifications and fault history all affect the most suitable approach. We do not claim every vehicle supports the same electronic diagnostics, but we do tailor the investigation to your specific car.
Everyday Road Cars
For daily drivers, we investigate reported symptoms in the context of normal road use.
Classic and Older Vehicles
Age, technology and available history can all affect how a classic or older vehicle is approached.
Enthusiast or Modified Vehicles
Existing modifications and fault history are taken into account when investigating enthusiast or modified vehicles.
If you are unsure whether we can look into your vehicle’s particular issue, get in touch and we can discuss it before booking.
WHEN A FAULT COMES AND GOES
Intermittent Faults and Why Details Matter
A problem that is not present during your visit can be genuinely difficult to investigate. It may require a careful history, repeat observation, or further investigation over time, and we cannot promise that every intermittent fault will be reproduced or resolved during a single visit.
Where it is safe to do so, noting details such as temperature, the stage of your journey, speed or driving conditions, and any messages shown can help build a clearer picture. Please only note these details when it is safe to do so, never while the vehicle is in an unsafe condition.

Vehicle Diagnostics FAQs
What does vehicle diagnostics involve?
It involves investigating a reported symptom, warning light or unusual behaviour by examining the vehicle, reviewing relevant information and carrying out appropriate checks, rather than replacing parts based on a code alone.
Does a fault code tell you exactly which part has failed?
No. A stored fault code points towards an area or system that may be involved, but it does not on its own prove which specific part has failed. Further investigation is usually needed to understand the cause.
Can you simply clear a dashboard warning light?
Clearing a warning light without investigating what caused it does not address the underlying issue, and the light is likely to return. We do not promise to clear a warning without first looking into what triggered it.
Can you investigate an intermittent fault?
Yes, where possible. Intermittent faults can be more difficult to investigate than a constant issue, and we cannot promise the fault will be reproduced or resolved during a single visit, but we will explain what we can do.
What information should I provide?
Your registration, make, model and year, the exact wording of any warning light or message, a description of the symptoms, when they began and when they occur, and any relevant history or modifications.
Is diagnostics the same as servicing?
No. Diagnostics investigates a specific reported symptom or warning, while servicing is planned routine maintenance. A vehicle may need one, both, or neither, depending on what is found.
Does a diagnostic assessment include the repair?
Not automatically. A diagnostic assessment investigates the issue. If repair work is identified as necessary, this is quoted and discussed with you separately before anything is agreed.
Can you diagnose every make and model?
We cannot promise the same diagnostic approach suits every make and model. Technology and available information vary between vehicles, so get in touch and we can discuss your specific car.
What should I do if a red warning appears or the car feels unsafe?
Stop somewhere safe as soon as it is safe to do so, and seek professional or recovery advice. Please do not continue driving if you are uncertain whether the vehicle is safe.
How much will diagnostics cost?
This depends on your vehicle and the scope of investigation involved, so we do not quote a fixed price without understanding the reported symptom first.
How long will diagnosis take?
This depends on the nature of the fault, and we cannot promise a fixed timeframe, particularly for an intermittent issue. We will keep you informed as the investigation progresses.
How do I request an appointment or quote?
